s16 film festival 2024
The 2024 S16 Film Festival (Dec 5–8, Lagos) explored the theme “Technologics,” spotlighting how African filmmakers use technology to expand cinematic language. Hosted at Alliance Française, it featured screenings of boundary-pushing short and feature films, an exhibition, panel conversations, and masterclasses with international guests. The festival opened with Rungano Nyoni’s On Becoming a Guinea Fowl and closed with Denise Fernandes’ Hanami, while a strong lineup of indie shorts reaffirmed S16’s reputation as a home for experimental, non-mainstream African cinema. Supported by partners including THE FRENCH EMBASSY, CONSULATE OF THE NETHERLANDS, GOETHE INSTITUTE AND Sterling Bank, the 2024 edition emphasized artistic freedom, new voices, and a growing global engagement with alternative African film cultures.
